TRENTON, N.J. (September 30, 2026) – The New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation, and Technology (CSIT) today applauded the multiple CSIT awardees that will be honored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Three CSIT recipients will be honored with Edison Patent Awards, while Kathryn Carpenter, the Founder & CEO of Cecilia Materials, will receive the Emerging Tech Award.

This year’s theme, ‘Revolution Through Innovation,’ pays tribute to New Jersey inventor Thomas Edison and celebrates the inventors and entrepreneurs who continue his legacy. The 47th Annual Edison Patent Awards Ceremony will take place on November 19, 2026, at Bell Works in Holmdel.

“CSIT is proud to position New Jersey as a leader in startup creation and entrepreneurial growth, advancing emerging technologies and strengthening the State’s innovation ecosystem,” said CSIT Executive Director Judith Sheft. “This year’s recipients demonstrates the progress that CSIT has made in expanding access to capital and strategic resources for New Jersey entrepreneurs, leading to meaningful discoveries and life-changing work across the state.”

“Through its funding, CSIT empowers early-stage companies by equipping them with essential resources to turn innovative discoveries into practical solutions,” said Debbie Hart, Chair of CSIT and President and CEO of BioNJ. “The recognition these awards bring underscores the significant role CSIT plays in supporting entrepreneurs, demonstrating how well-designed programs can expand opportunities for business owners and reinforce New Jersey’s innovation-driven economy.”

Kathryn Carpenter, Founder & CEO of Cecilia Materials will be presented with the Emerging Tech Award. This award is presented to a New Jersey individual, team, or organization whose early-stage innovation shows exceptional potential to make a significant impact on the marketplace. Cecilia Materials’ technology transforms industrial plastic waste into high-value advanced carbons. Headquartered in Newark, Cecilia Materials is a recipient of the Clean Tech Seed Research & Development (R&D) Grant, the Pilot Clean Tech Demonstration Grant Program, SBIR/STTR Bridge Grant Program, and is a two-time recipient of the Clean Tech (R&D) Voucher Pilot Program.

“To be honored alongside the legacy of Thomas Edison is a humbling milestone for the team,” said Kathryn Carpenter, Founder & CEO of Cecilia Materials. “Innovation has been an existential reality for our society throughout history, and it’s never an easy road to implementing step-change technologies. We are proud to be a part of an ecosystem that supports pushing these boundaries.”

13 Mari Ltd., Chiral Photonics, Inc., and Innerstill will receive Edison Patent Awards. Winning patents were selected by a team of Council board members who evaluated patents for the significance of the problem it solves, its utility and socio-economic value, its novelty, and its commercial impact. Every winning patent must have at least part of its technical or scientific work completed in New Jersey.

13 Mari Ltd., located in Kearny, is a recipient of the Clean Tech Seed Grant Round 2 Program. Chiral Photonics, based in Montville, received matching funding through the SBIR/STTR Bridge Grant Program and the NJEDA’s Manufacturing Voucher Program. Innerstill, headquartered in Hopewell, received a Catalyst R&D Voucher and a Maternal and Infant Health R&D Seed grant.

“Receiving the Edison Award is a tremendous honor. More than acknowledging a specific innovation, it celebrates the dedication of our entire team at Chiral Photonics,” said Dan Neugroschl, President of Chiral Photonics. “Their unwavering commitment and collaborative spirit are essential for bringing our products to market and helping to establish multicore fiber as the next generation of optical infrastructure now sweeping the globe.”

“Transformational technologies require more than a big idea – they require an ecosystem willing to help bring that idea to life,” said Ellyn Ito, Co-Founder and CEO of Innerstill. “CSIT provided critical support as we advanced our technology here in New Jersey. To see that work now recognized with an Edison Patent Award is incredibly meaningful and proof that world-class neurotechnology can be built by lean, start-up innovators in New Jersey for a global market.”

“The Edison Award is a great recognition for the work done at 13 Mari, as the working novel passive boundary control we develop goes against the common wisdom and will likely lead to not only practical applications, but theoretical breakthroughs,” said Krassi Fotev, Founder, CEO & Chief Scientist of 13 Mari. “In our company’s history, there were a few critical moments. One of them was securing funds for initial experimental investigation, which we got going thanks to the CSIT grant program.”

According to its 2025 Annual Report, CSIT approved 120 awards totaling $5.1 million in 2025.

Earlier this year, CSIT released findings from an economic impact assessment of its programs. Since 2020, CSIT-supported companies have issued approximately 600 grants, totaling $34 million. Companies that have reported data have created nearly 1,800 jobs and raised $524.5 million in additional capital – more than 20 times the amount awarded through CSIT programs.

CSIT currently offers the following programs:

  • Catalyst CSIT R&D Voucher Program
    • The goal of the Catalyst R&D Voucher Pilot Program is to support New Jersey-based early-stage company efforts to accelerate development and innovation of technologies to transform new discoveries from research stage into commercially viable technologies, leading to industry and investor interest.
      • In 2025, the Catalyst R&D Voucher Program awarded 49 vouchers, totaling $1.9 million.
  • Clean Tech CSIT R&D Voucher Program
    • Round 2 of the Clean Tech R&D Voucher Program is intended to support early-stage clean tech and clean energy companies in New Jersey to access core facilities, equipment, and makerspaces for clean energy and clean technological research and development.
      • In 2025, the Clean Tech R&D Voucher Program awarded 21 vouchers totaling over $782,000.

TRENTON, N.J. (August 5, 2026) – The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) announced today that the New Jersey Chapter of Golden Seeds has invested more than $10 million in women-owned start-ups since its launch in 2020. The announcement follows Golden Seeds’ milestone of investing more than $200 million in women-owned companies. Golden Seeds is one of the nation’s largest and most active angel investment networks. The New Jersey Chapter of Golden Seeds was launched in 2020 in partnership with the NJEDA.

“This $10 million investment milestone reflects the transformative impact of expanding access to capital for women entrepreneurs,” said NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Evan Weiss. “Golden Seeds is supporting Governor Sherrill’s mission to build businesses that drive innovation, create jobs, and strengthen the state’s economy by connecting female founders with the funding, mentorship, and networks they need to grow and succeed.”

Founded in 2004, Golden Seeds is the third-largest national angel group based on number of transactions and the largest angel investment group nationwide focused on investment in women-led businesses. Golden Seeds members, nearly 300 strong, along with its venture funds, invested $200 million in more than 270 women-led companies.

“New Jersey is fostering an environment where women-led businesses can thrive by expanding access to capital and cultivating a strong angel investment ecosystem,” said NJEDA Chief Economic Transformation Officer Kathleen Coviello. “This milestone demonstrates how strategic investment in female founders fuels innovation, creates economic opportunity, and strengthens communities across our state.”

The New Jersey Chapter currently has 23 members and invests primarily in technology, life sciences and healthcare, and consumer sectors. There are currently eight New Jersey companies that came through the New Jersey Chapter Office Hours that are funded by Golden Seeds.

Based in Moorestown, Burlington County, Otava RF, Inc. develops end-to-end technology and radio frequency chips used by advanced 5G and Department of War applications. Otava raised a total of $1.5 million to date from Golden Seeds in 2022, 2024, and 2025. Otava Inc. is also a recipient of the NJEDA’s Angel Match Program.

“Golden Seeds has been far more than an investor – they have been a trusted partner throughout Otava Radio Frequency (RF)’s journey,” said Victoria Pereira, CEO and Founder of Octava. “Their early confidence in our team and technology provided both the capital and credibility needed to pursue an ambitious vision in the highly competitive semiconductor industry. Through multiple rounds of investment, they have continued to believe in our mission and support our growth. We are grateful to have Golden Seeds as we build the next generation of RF semiconductor technologies.”

The New Jersey chapter of Golden Seeds holds monthly Office Hours to introduce entrepreneurs with Golden Seeds investors, provide information on the angel investing process and support qualified founders through the Golden Seeds funding pipeline. From February 2020 thru June 2026, the chapter has hosted 225 female entrepreneurs in 64 monthly office hours. The next Office Hours session for the New Jersey chapter of Golden Seeds will be on September 9 at 4 p.m. To sign up, click here.

Centers in Camden and Mullica Hill will bolster early-stage medtech companies and promote scientific and commercial collaboration

CAMDEN, N.J. (July 21, 2025) – Today, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) announced it will partner with Rowan University to create a new multi-location Strategic Innovation Center (SIC) in Camden and Mullica Hill. The SIC, operated by Plug and Play, will support the research, development, and commercialization of novel medical technologies and devices, serving as an accelerator for South Jersey’s burgeoning medtech ecosystem. The SIC will have locations in Camden and at Rowan University’s West Campus in Mullica Hill, serving as a world-class accelerator for early-stage companies and promoting overall scientific collaboration in the region.

Cooper University Health Care will serve as the anchor commercial affiliate and Garden State Venture Partners (GSVP) will invest in select participating accelerator companies. The SIC will support early-stage ideas emerging from southern New Jersey labs and pull companies from across the region into the state, helping to provide specialized lab space to meet the needs of companies that might otherwise be forced to seek expansion outside New Jersey.

“Due to the ingenuity of its entrepreneurs and its breadth of state resources to promote startup growth, New Jersey has long been a hub for innovation in medical technology,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “Through robust investment in our innovation economy and partnerships with storied medical and academic institutions, New Jersey is poised to maintain its leadership in the research and development of inventive healthcare technologies.”

“Under Governor Murphy’s leadership, New Jersey is leveraging partnerships with the private sector and academic institutions to bolster the state’s startup community, ensuring that entrepreneurs have access to capital and opportunities for meaningful collaboration with industry stakeholders,” said NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan. “Through the NJEDA’s Strategic Innovation Center initiative, the Garden State’s leadership in medtech and healthcare innovation will be strengthened, enhancing New Jersey’s economic competitiveness.”

The SIC will encompass 8,500 square feet of space within two locations in Camden: the Joint Health Sciences Center and the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. It will also have space on Rowan University’s West Campus in Mullica Hill, alongside the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine and Virtua Health College Research Center of Rowan University, when open. The SIC will include comprehensive laboratory, diagnostic, and testing spaces for research and development of new technologies in a collaborative environment.

Pending approval by its Board, the NJEDA will invest $9.55 million into the SIC, including $5.5 million into a seed and early-stage fund for companies in the accelerator program and those that choose to locate and grow their operations in the State. 20 percent of participating companies must be from New Jersey, and the remaining participants will include companies from out of state that may relocate to New Jersey with support from programs that support early-stage startups, such as NJ Accelerate.

Rowan University is among the nation’s top 100 research universities, the nation’s third fastest-growing public research institution, and one of two public universities nationwide with three medical schools. Along with the Cooper Medical School, the SIC will partner with the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine and the Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences, leveraging the university’s world-class facilities and faculty expertise to support startup creation.

“Nothing like the SIC exists to draw investments of this type to New Jersey,” said Rowan University President Ali A. Houshmand. “Governor Murphy’s vision helps health care innovators, entrepreneurs and investors take a giant leap forward in developing novel solutions. The SIC will add value to strong partnerships like those we have throughout the state with health care leaders as a result of our medical education and research excellence. We’re eager to see the SIC and GSVP attract startups that will thrive alongside Cooper, Rowan, and our other partners.”

GSVP is a New Jersey-based venture capital firm committed to driving innovation and economic growth across the state. GSVP-managed funds will deploy up to $7 million in seed and later-stage investments into select companies participating in the initiative. As part of its investment strategy, GSVP seeks to accelerate the commercialization of breakthrough technologies emerging from Rowan University, other leading research institutions, universities, healthcare organizations, and innovation centers throughout New Jersey.

“Partnering with the NJEDA, Rowan University, Cooper University Health Care and Plug and Play to launch the State’s newest Strategic Innovation Center marks a pivotal milestone for Garden State Venture Partners and for New Jersey’s innovation economy,” said Michael Connallon, Managing Partner at Garden State Venture Partners. “By aligning both early and later-stage capital with world-class academic research and the clinical expertise of leading health systems, we are building a powerful platform to accelerate breakthroughs in healthcare and medical technologies—sectors that are vital to both public health and long-term economic growth across the state.”

Cooper University Health Care is a leading New Jersey academic health system, consistently recognized as one of the top health systems in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. As its anchor commercial affiliate, Cooper University Health Care will provide engagement and support to companies operating at the SIC.

“Supporting innovations and business creation that work to improve lives is a major focus of the work of Cooper’s Innovation Center,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper University Health Care. “We are excited to play a supporting role in work that will generate jobs as well as technologies and devices to improve and save lives.”

Plug and Play, an innovation platform and startup accelerator, will be the SIC’s operator, overseeing two cohorts of at least 25 companies a year. The NJEDA previously partnered with Plug and Play on the Fintech Accelerator at Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ FAST), a financial technology and insurance technology SIC.

“We’re proud to partner with NJEDA, Rowan University, and Cooper University Health Care to accelerate medtech innovation in South Jersey,” said Plug and Play Chief Revenue Officer and Partner Michael Olmstead. “This Strategic Innovation Center reflects our belief that meaningful progress happens when startups, healthcare leaders, academia, and the public sector come together with a shared mission. Our goal is to help the next generation of healthcare companies scale their impact faster — right here in New Jersey.”

“Throughout his administration, Governor Murphy has been committed to creating an environment where entrepreneurs can pursue innovative ideas with the capital and resources needed to succeed,” said NJEDA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Mary Maples. “The NJEDA’s newest SIC in Camden and Mullica Hill will foster a culture of collaboration among South Jersey’s healthcare, academic, and technology sectors, ensuring that startup businesses in the medtech space have access to cutting-edge research and funding opportunities.”

“Through programs like the NJEDA’s Strategic Innovation Center initiative, New Jersey is continuing to invest in high-growth, strategic sectors that will define the economic future of the state,” said NJEDA Chief Economic Transformation Officer Kathleen Coviello. “Our newest SIC investment will leverage Rowan University’s academic prowess in medical technology to boost inventive startup companies and promote novel discoveries, furthering South Jersey’s standing as a regional leader in medtech innovation.”

SICs are facilities that support research and development, innovation, and entrepreneurship through mentorship, networking opportunities, hands-on training, business support services, and education opportunities. SICs can be accelerators, incubators, or research centers. Having a physical location where entrepreneurs can collaborate will help support new, diverse innovators and help drive long-term economic growth.

The NJEDA has announced investments into 12 SICs in New Jersey, focused on industries such as artificial intelligence, fintech, aerospace, life sciences, and biotech. To learn more about the NJEDA’s SIC initiative, visit https://www.njeda.gov/strategic-innovation-centers/.
